These are all perfectly normal human activities; and they are all things that recruitment candidates have done during telephone interviews.<\/p>\n<p>A recent survey of nearly 800 recruitment and HR professionals by Changeboard in association with the Post Office found that many candidates fail to take telephone interviews as seriously as face-to-face interviews, and risk losing out as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Some 60% of organisations (74% of private sector firms) use telephone interviews as part of their recruitment process. They are most commonly used to save time and money by screening applicants before inviting them for face-to-face interviews.<\/p>\n<p>This means that a telephone interview is an important opportunity for the candidate to make a good impression and secure a meeting with the recruiting organisation. But many candidates fluff that opportunity.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>Common candidate mistakes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to the survey respondents, the biggest mistakes telephone interviewees make are:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.recruitment-connection.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Tel-pic-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-97\" src=\"http:\/\/www.recruitment-connection.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Tel-pic-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Father Holding Baby on Shoulder\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doing something else during the telephone interview<\/li>\n<li>Not preparing properly for the telephone interview<\/li>\n<li>Not listening to the interviewer\u2019s questions<\/li>\n<li>Having a poor telephone manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These errors can all \u2018seriously harm the candidate\u2019s chance of progression\u2019 to the next stage of the interview process.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents cited many real-life examples of telephone interview faux-pas. One recruiter revealed: \u201cDuring the interview it became clear that the candidate was on the loo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another said: \u201cThe candidate was pulled over by the police for taking a call in the car without hands-free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And a third recalled: \u201cThe candidate suddenly said: \u2018Sorry, I\u2019ve got to go \u2013 the snake has escaped,\u2019 and hung up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>Telephone interview hints and tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Telephone interviews can be especially tricky for candidates, as it is difficult to express yourself clearly on the phone. Nearly all survey respondents (95%) said that candidates can come across differently on the phone compared with face to face. And nearly half (49%) admitted that their mental image of candidates they have interviewed by telephone is often proved wrong when they meet them.<\/p>\n<p>The top tips from recruiters for candidates facing a telephone interview are:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Prepare yourself for the call as you would a face-to-face interview<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Choose a quiet place to take the call with a landline phone and no risk of interruption or background noise<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Pay as much attention to listening as to speaking<\/p>\n<p>One recruiter advised: \u201cDo not underestimate the seriousness of a telephone interview. It is often harder as you don\u2019t have the ability to demonstrate body language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another offered: \u201cTo get in the right mindset I always advise telephone interview candidates to sit at a desk and dress formally to help them think more professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And a third added: \u201cStand up when on the phone as your voice will project better. Change the tone of your voice and use it to show enthusiasm when appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Expert advice on telephone interview performance<\/h3>\n<p>Rob Willock, chief operating officer of Changeboard, said: \u201cFaced with a huge pile of CVs from equally qualified candidates, recruiters need a way of weeding out the weaker applicants, and many use telephone screening interviews. Don\u2019t give them a reason to reject you them by performing poorly on the telephone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrepare yourself properly, research the organisation, rehearse answers to standard questions, have relevant examples of your achievements to hand and ask some smart questions of your own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may also be worth practicing your telephone manner,\u201d added Willock. \u201cRecruiters reported being annoyed by candidates using colloquial or \u2018street\u2019 language during telephone interviews. Calling your interviewer \u2018mate\u2019 or \u2018love\u2019 or using phrases like \u2018innit\u2019 are not recommended, even if you do so with your friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s even something to be said for cultivating a more business-like \u2018telephone voice\u2019 for occasions when you want to impress people on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Apprentice winner and recruitment expert Lee McQueen said: \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to give anything your full attention if you\u2019re doing something else at the same time yet it\u2019s apparent that candidates aren\u2019t taking their interviews seriously enough.\u00a0 They wouldn\u2019t turn up to an interview dressed in a bobble hat and trainers and the same kind of consideration needs to be given when speaking to potential employers over the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about selling yourself and making an impression in the first two minutes.
